Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

IOM Ethiopia’s Migration Management Unit implements a programme aimed at improving migration management and governance in Ethiopia. The Unit manages projects focusing on a variety of migration management related activities.

Background

Under the overall supervision of the Migration Management Unit (MMU) Coordinator and the direct supervision of the Head of the Project Development and Strategy sub-unit, the incumbent shall be responsible for carrying out duties related to MMU’s project development, donor reporting and knowledge management activities. In particular, he/she will be responsible for the following responsibilities:

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

Project Development

§ Assist the Project Development and Strategy sub-unit in the development of project concept notes and proposals and ensure high degree of quality.

Project Implementation and Reporting

§ Assist the MMU team in the overall planning and implementation of selected MMU project activities;

§ Keep track and accurate record of project progress, namely via the use of the project implementation follow-up matrix to ensure ease in reporting;

§ Assist in drafting, compiling and reviewing donor reports for timely submission to donor.

Knowledge Management

§ Conduct close follow-up of research initiatives on topics related to mixed migration and migration management in the Horn of Africa, particularly in Ethiopia;

§ Manage the shared drive, establishing a thematic classification of MMU’s key documents in the shared folder and updating it regularly;

§ Attend relevant external and internal events (i.e. conferences, workshops) and take notes for file for sharing with MMU;

Unit’s Internal Organization

§ Organize MMU Focal Points’ weekly meetings;

§ Organize MMU’s monthly meetings, take and disseminate minutes, follow up on action points as necessary;

§ Collect and compile inputs from Focal Points for the Mission’s weekly Heads of Unit (HoU) meetings;

§ Ensure that internal organization tools (e.g. weekly progress updates for HoU, leave/absence board, project implementation matrix etc.) are updated and shared regularly, and improve them as necessary.

Communication

§ Assist the MMU team in promoting its initiatives and ensuring donor visibility through drafting/reviewing press releases, newsletters, briefing notes, etc.;

§ Perform any other related duties.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Master’s Degree in International Relations, Political Science, Journalism, Law, Economics or other Social Science field.

Experience

· Prior experience working for an international organization, particularly on migration issues, would be an asset, though not required.

· Familiarity with the work of NGOs and/or International Organizations would be a plus.

Languages

Required (specify the required knowledge) Advantageous

Excellent command of written and spoken English. Native English speaker preferred.

In all cases, a prerequisite for taking up the position is legal residency in the country of the duty station, or in the neighbouring country located within commuting distance, and work permit, as applicable.
