The volunteer's role:
The purpose of this placement is to improve the quality of patients’ care by addressing of challenges presented by poorly functioning health equipment.
The advisor will provide strategic and technical assistance to build regular and corrective maintenance skills amongst the Rehabilitation and Curative Core Process Team and associated regional technicians through teamwork, hands-on training, mentoring and coaching. The placement also intends to improve procedures and policy frameworks to acquire technologically relevant equipment.
The volunteer will:
- Support the development of a health equipment / machines inventory management system
- Develop simple manuals for operation, care and handling of basic health equipment, establish safety-related procedures
- Provide needs-based in-service trainings to build the capacity of technicians to carry-out basic equipment maintenance and strengthen capacity of health professionals/end users of biomedical equipment
- Introduce equipment performance monitoring and evaluation systems
- Provide advice to the RHB around the establishment of a biomedical maintenance workshop/facility
Essential Academic Qualifications:
- Graduate in biomedical equipment technology
- 2 years experience in medical equipment installation, maintenance, and repair
Essential Professional Background/Competencies:
- Communication skills, dexterity, mechanical skills, physical stamina, technical skills , time management skills
Desirable Academic Qualifications:
- Experience in repairing a wide range of electronic, electromechanical and hydraulic equipment used in hospital
Desirable Professional Background/Competencies:
- Training and coaching
- Experiences in project management / policy development
Important information for candidates
Cuso International covers the majority of the $29,000 cost of being an overseas volunteer, including:
• Travel and accommodation for the five-day pre-departure training course and in-country training orientation
• Return airfare and visa/permit costs

• Accommodation while overseas
• Modest living allowance while overseas
• Modest support for accompanying partners and dependents going on placement with you for 12 months or longer
• Travel and accommodation for reintegration debriefing weekend
Fundraising: We ask each volunteer, regardless of placement length, to raise $2,000. All volunteers receive support from Cuso International to help achieve the goal through fundraising. If the volunteer chooses not to fundraise or is unable to achieve the fundraising goal, he/she can make a one-time donation or become a monthly donor to support our work.
• E-volunteering: Depending on the nature of the placement, the volunteer might be required to provide e-volunteering support to the local partner or Cuso International before or after the field placement.
