Position Description:
The Regional Portfolio Director, Coffee East Africa, provides strategic and technical leadership for our coffee portfolio in East Africa. This role involves managing new business development with public and corporate partners and ensuring a high quality of program design and implementation. The director will be responsible for representing TechnoServe at coffee fora in East Africa and this position can be based in any of the project countries in East Africa.
Primary activities include, but are not limited to:
Operational management
- Recruit and retain quality managerial staff to implement coffee programs and to support through the regional support team
- Ensure sound managerial, technical and financial development of all coffee programs
- Oversee, support and evaluate strategic, operational, and financial performance of all coffee programs
- Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning with an emphasis on learning and disseminating learning internally and externally, including production of lessons-learned documents and communications pieces
- Coaching and development of staff
- Achieving programmatic results, and/or identifying necessary adaptations to programs
- Donor reporting and internal reporting
- Financial management
- Coordination and collaboration with divisional team and Country Directors.
Strategy and new business development
- Support the Global Coffee Director in the design and articulation of TechnoServe's East Africa coffee strategy
- Identify new coffee program opportunities in East Africa
- Lead coffee new business development in East Africa in partnership with Strategic Initiatives, Program Development and the East Africa division
- Assist in East Africa division and country-specific strategic planning related to the coffee sector
Industry stakeholder management
- Build TechnoServe's position as a leader in developing and implementing innovative coffee programs in East Africa
- Build sector partnerships and alliances, with emphasis on corporate partnerships
- Represent TechnoServe in relevant East African coffee fora
Innovation & learning
- Develop innovative approaches to TechnoServe’s work and share these innovations with other staff to promote the adoption of best practices
- In coordination with the Global Coffee Director, communicate progress, learnings and achievements of the programs internally across TechnoServe, with donors/funders, and externally, in liaison with corporate marketing
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in management, business administration, agricultural economics, international development or relevant field, or equivalent work experience
- At least 10 years of multi-national experience in coffee value chain development, agribusiness, business strategy, industry analysis, financial management, and monitoring and evaluation
- Experience in proposal development and a proven track record for fund raising and public relations
- Strong leadership, supervisory, communication and coordination skills required
- Demonstrated competency in program and staff management, coaching and team leadership
- Strategic and analytical thinking skills
- Exceptional interpersonal and cross-cultural skills
- Fluent user of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
