****BACKGROUND****

International Medical Corps, a global humanitarian nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs, seeks candidates for the position of ****Surgeon**** in South Sudan.

Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Its mission is to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in underserved communities worldwide. By offering training and health care to local populations and medical assistance to people at highest risk, and with the flexibility to respond rapidly to emergency situations, International Medical Corps rehabilitates devastated health care systems and helps bring them back to self-reliance.

****JOB SUMMARY****

The primary function of the Surgeon is to provide overall leadership of International Medical Corps’s activities in the location of the rural and remote clinic he/she is assigned to. The primary responsibilities will be overall coordination of primary health care clinic functioning. The position also will be responsible for performing surgical services and monitoring overall program quality. The Surgeon will report to the Program Manager and Medical Director and will liaise closely with the technical and support teams based in Juba.

****ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES****

Medical Oversight

  • Provide clinical care to patients in the OPD and IPD and ensure high quality clinical care is provided to patients at the clinic
  • Do daily ward rounds for the patients in the IPD and provide the necessary care according to the identified needs
  • Manage all components of the medical practice set-up and ongoing management based on the South Sudan treatment guidelines and protocols
  • Participate in performing surgeries (both emergency and elective) to patients in need and provide post-operative care as directed by the surgeon
  • Participate in supportive supervision for junior staff and provide on the job training as needed

Staff Management

  • Provide regular support and supervision to staff under direct line management – this includes regularly scheduled supervision and performance management meetings
  • Assure clear performance expectations, adequate skills and knowledge, adequate tools, motivation, and job satisfaction of staff
  • Participate in staff recruitment; take disciplinary measures against employees as per authority limit specified in the HR Manual
  • Oversee the recruitment and selection of qualified national staff; recommend promotions, disciplinary action, and termination of staff in consultation with supervisor

Representation and Coordination

  • Represent International Medical Corps and liaise with local authorities, the UN, and NGOs to promote International Medical Corps programs, facilitate successful coordination of activities, and ensure transparency in the community
  • Work in partnership with other international and local NGOs to ensure program harmonization
  • Ensure maximum visibility of International Medical Corps
  • Promote partnerships and networking among stakeholders, including CBOS, FBOs, and NGOs, and document meetings

Other Functions

  • Perform any other related duties that may be assigned by line manager
  • Comply with International Medical Corps Standard Operational Procedures

****QUALIFICATIONS****

“To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonable accommodation.”

  • Medical degree that includes surgery (MD, MBChB, MBBS, etc.) from a recognized medical institution
  • Two or more years’ experience post-medical degree in clinical work with the government or private or hospital practice OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience working with NGOs in a humanitarian setting is preferred
  • Experience in a management role, supervision, and mentoring of junior staff preferred
  • Basic surgical skills, including ability to perform caesarean sections, herniorrhaphies, and other surgical emergencies preferred
  • Previous relevant experience in Africa or similar environment – South Sudan experience highly valued
  • Flexibility and willingness to adjust to changing responsibilities or needs as they arise
  • Demonstrated analytical and conceptual skills to design and plan projects
  • Proven ability to work cooperatively with others in a diversified team environment
  • Willingness to live in a remote site, with basic accommodations
  • Excellent communication skills, including professional fluency in spoken and written English
  • Excellent computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
