TRAINING MANUALS DEVELOPMENT CONSULTANCY
REGIONAL TRANSITIONAL AID PROGRAMME FOR FOOD AND NUTRITIONAL SECURITY IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA’(PRANA)ANDADAPTION OF AGRICULTURAL CULTIVATION METHODS TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND STABILIZATION OF LIVELIHOODS IN WESTERN BAR EL GHAZAL, SOUTH SUDAN (TDA CLIMATE) JUR RIVER COUNTY WESTERN BAHR EL GHAZAL STATE**
Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Germany (VSF-G) is an international Non-Governmental Organization, providing humanitarian aid and development assistance to pastoralists and vulnerable communities in areas where livestock is of importance. VSF-G supports in animal health, livestock related agriculture, marketing, food safety, drought responses and mitigation, capacity development of communities and governmental institutions, peace and conflict resolution with the ultimate aim of food security and strengthened livelihoods of pastoralist communities.
VSF Germany is implementing 2 projects with grant support from GIZ. These projects are for 10 months focusing on food security in Jur River County of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, South Sudan. The Grant is being implemented by a consortium of 2 international organizations namely; Johanniter International and Veterinaries’ sans Frontiers’ Germany (VSF G). Johanniter International is leading the project and over sees the implementation of the Nutrition component of the project while VSF Germany is responsible for implementing the Agriculture component. The Agriculture component is being implemented in 3 payams namely Udici, Marial Bai and Rocrocdong all in Jur River County. The project supports the target HH with seeds and tools as well as trainings to improve on their agronomic practices widely dominated by traditional farming. Knowledge transfer for improved farming practice has been a hindrance to crop production due to lack of relevant and localized information aimed at improved farming practices. The 2 organizations are also implementing a 3 years BMZ funded project in the same county specifically in Wau Bai, kangi and Udici Payams. They target beneficiaries are the adult learners enthused to acquire new farming skills. The projects intend to development simple, apprehendable and quick to practice training materials for the groups.
Objectives of the consultancy
The main objective of developing the learning materials is to enhance the knowledge and hands-on skills of the farmers and the extension officers on improved staple crops farming technology.
Specifically, the manuals are intended to:-
i. Increase farmers awareness of on better farming techniques of staple and vegetable crops by adopting practical and locally improved cropping technology like raw planting and integrated pest control
ii. Enhance farmers capacity on handling seeds and seedling as well introduction of the routine practices for increased crop and vegetable production
iii. Assist farmers to apply the pre and post harvest technology to reduce food wastage and encourage better storage and preservation practices.
In the given context, VSF Germany wishes to develop practical working document for the key players in the Food security pathway - farmers, extension and institutions. The manual should provide the farmers with elegy-visual learning materials that are friendly and quickly ingestible by the elderly farmers. The training facilitators will use the manual to provide clear step-by-step guidelines for the farmers.
For this VSF Germany invites proposals from the reputed and experienced experts towards development of the learning manuals.
Accommodation, meals, local transport within South Sudan and the project areas will be provided by VSF Germany during the consultancy period; as well the translators, enumerators, office space, printing of questionnaires etc will be provided by VSF Germany. The consultants will be responsible for their medical insurance and travel Documents. Interested candidates are required to submit technical and financial proposal for consideration
